Winter Protection
Bananas all wrapped up for winter
In our Fellows Garden, our male bananas Musa basjoo were covered up using horticultural fleece and tied up using stripped down Phormium leaves.
Cannas Lifted
Our Cannas are cut back to a few inches before covering their rhizomes with compost. These are then stored in bread trays and left to overwinter in our glasshouse. The plants are initially watered but then remain dry throughout the winter months until new shoots start to break. They are then potted up individually and watered as necessary.
Echium pininana
Native to the Canary Islands our tender Echiums have been potted up into these amazing Air-Pots
http://www.air-pot.com/ and kept inside to grow on inside our heated glasshouse.
During the spring they will be hardened off in the polytunnel before being transplanted to the herbaceous border where they will flower early summer.
Coldframes
With night temperatures consistently dropping below zero, our coldframes in conjunction with our glasshouse, are a valuable asset to have over the winter months.
